Pop Paper City (52 x 11’) has won MIPTV’s 2020 Kids Series Pitch.  The Kids Series Pitch presents the most promising projects from creators and producers of animation and live-action series from around the globe, showcasing new projects to meet kids’ growing appetite for innovative content. Pop Paper City was one of only five projects to be selected for the pitch out of hundreds of applications, and was the only series to have been produced in the UK.

MIPTV is a global, multi-genre content market that takes place in Cannes, France every year. The event provides producers, content creators, distributors, and many others with the opportunity to discover exciting new content and trade rights on an international scale.

Pop Paper City is a vibrant 3D craft show with adventure. The series follows a group of unique paper characters as they get crafty and create adventures together in a captivating paper world. In each eleven-minute episode, the characters find new ways to have fun together by creating new parts of their already impressive world. The craft montages in the show – which mix live-action with 3D animation – inspire children to make their own paper creations, encouraging ‘doing as well as viewing.’

Following the outbreak of COVID-19, many of MipTV’s sessions were held virtually. This included the Kids Series Pitch, for which finalists had to submit an online pitch presentation for their projects. An esteemed panel of Jury Members from across the children’s TV landscape were in charge of assessing the pitches. The panel included the Senior Acquisitions Manager (Kids EMEA) for Warner Media, Zia Bales, the VP Animation for Nickelodeon International, Chris Rose, and Acquisitions Executive of YLE, Vicky Schroderus, just to name a few.

Pop Paper City’s success in the MipTV’s 2020 Kids Series Pitch follows a noteworthy development journey for the show. In 2019, Pop Paper City received development funding from the BFI’s Young Audiences Content Fund (YACF). The YACF supports the creation of distinctive, high quality content for audiences up to the age of 18. Using the development money, the LoveLove Films team developed a brand new teaser trailer for the show, along with various other development materials. Alongside LoveLove MD/Pop Paper City’s producer Georgina Hurcombe, the Aardman distribution team presented the new Pop Paper City teaser at MIPJr 2019, where the project became the 4th most-viewed project at the event’s screening library. Aardman was appointed the distribution partner for the LoveLove Films property last year.

Commenting on Pop Paper City being selected for MIPTV’s Kids Series Pitch, Producer/LoveLove MD Georgina Hurcombe said:

“We are absolutely delighted that Pop Paper City has won the Kids Series Pitch. The Pitch is such a great way for upcoming producers to get their content out there, and it’s a wonderful showcase of all the innovative kids’ content in development right now. The whole team have worked so hard to develop Pop Paper City, and it’s really fantastic to get this prestigious industry recognition from MIPTV. We are thrilled to be the winning pitch.”

Chin Up was first conceived when the concept was pitched to people-powered content network MOFILM, as part of their ‘Many Voices’ global initiative project. Following the ‘Year of Women’ in 2018 – which saw female empowerment reach new heights – MOFILM asked filmmakers from around the world to respond to the question, “What does the year of women mean where you are?” The LoveLove Team’s response to this was Chin Up.

LoveLove Films won the pitch with Chin Up, and our very own animator JoAnne took on the role of director for the animation, which represented her own story about living with Treacher Collins Syndrome, a genetic condition characterised my physical deformity. JoAnne is now living her dream as an animator and a female creative, proud to demonstrate that her insecurities haven’t stopped her from reaching for the stars. The animation blends 2D mixed media animation and illustration in its scrapbook style vision to bring JoAnne’s story to life.

Commenting on Chin Up, director JoAnne Salmon said:

“Chin Up is, at its essence, a story of hope and self-acceptance. My story. It’s about following your dreams and persevering in the face of adversity and embracing all the quirks that make you, you! I have learned that being different is not always about outside appearances, it can be on the inside too and everyone wants to feel accepted.”

LoveLove Films are proud to announce that Chin Up has been shortlisted for the renowned 2020 British Animation Public Choice Award that will be presented at the British Animation Awards (BAA) ceremony on March 12th 2020.

2020 will see the 13th edition of the BAAs take place at the BFI Southbank in London and will showcase the best examples of animation produced in the UK over the last year. Since 1996, the BAAs has been exclusively recognising and rewarding outstanding British animation and state that they are: “passionate about animation and ensuring our art form is supported, credited, promoted and gets celebrated the way it deserves’.

Chin Up’s listing at the BAA’s can be found in Programme 2, alongside the music video for Coldplay’s 2019 hit Daddy, which was created by our Pop Paper City distribution partners Aardman.

The concept for Chin Up was pitched to MOFILM, the people-powered content network, in response to their ‘Many Voices’ global initiative project. The year of 2018 saw female empowerment around the world reach new heights and so it gained the ‘Year of Women’ status. In recognising this leap forward in equality MOFILM encouraged international filmmakers to answer the question: ‘What does the year of women mean where you are?’

LoveLove Films won the pitch with Chin Up and our very own animator JoAnne took on the role of director for the animation, which represented her own story about living with Treacher Collins Syndrome, a genetic condition characterised my physical deformity. JoAnne is now living her dream as an animator and a female creative, proud to demonstrate that her insecurities haven’t stopped her from reaching for the stars. BAAs selection of Chin Up fills us at LoveLove Films with pride and we look forward to the film being recognised by such a prestigious platform.”

As the year comes to a close, LoveLove Films looks back at what we’ve been up to in 2019…

First of all, we’d like to say Merry Christmas and a huge thank you to all of our clients who have made this year so special for us. 2019 has been a busy year and we are very grateful to have had the chance to produce a whole host of amazing projects.

From the exciting awards our animated documentary Chin Up received, to the development of our preschool craft adventure series Pop Paper City; LoveLove Films has had a great year!

2019 started with a bang when our team won two Royal Television Society Awards!

Chin Up’s 2019 Festival Run

Our animated documentary Chin Up (read more about it here) had an incredibly successful festival run. Directed and narrated by our very own animator JoAnne Salmon, Chin Up is a story of hope, overcoming adversity, and accepting yourself and all the things that have shaped you. It received official selections from The British Animation Film Festival, Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, and Encounters International Film Festival, among several others.

It won three awards, one at the previously mentioned RTS Awards, one at the Superfest Disability Film Festival, and one at Sharjah International Children’s Film Festival, as well as being shown at festivals across the globe, from California to the UAE.

Pop Paper City

The past year has also seen the rapid development of our preschool IP Pop Paper City. Pop Paper City is a vibrant 3D craft show with adventure, set in a place where dreams can become reality. The series focuses on a group of unique friends who live at Pop Paper City, the capital of the stunning and endlessly peculiar paper world. You can read more about the show here!

In June of this year, LoveLove Films proudly announced that we’ve partnered with British animation legends Aardman, known for Wallace and Gromit, Pirates and Shaun the Sheep! Their International Sales and Acquisitions team agreed to distribute the show. You can read all about our distribution partnership with Aaardman here.

Pop Paper City also had the honour of being the fourth most screened project at MIPJunior Screenings Library 2019. MIPJunior is the world’s leading event for the children’s entertainment industry; the event takes place in Cannes, France, every year.

Broadcast Graphics

This year saw us also work on an array of exciting TV shows including SAS: Who Dares Wins, The Murder of Charlene Downs and War In The Blood.

For SAS: Who Dares Wins, we were commissioned to create animated TV graphics for series three of the renowned Channel 4 show. To create the graphics, we used satellite imagery as a reference and then created a 3D Model of the geography, to give the audience a better image of what route that the contestants take in the show.

Key Events

Nurturing new talent and encouraging animation in the UK is incredibly important to us as a studio. We have had over thirty students join our award winning new talent placement scheme this year, and have been speaking and participating at several industry events across the country, such as Digital Wave and the BFX Festival here in Bournemouth, and the Manimation event in Manchester.

At the BFX Panel, LoveLove team members JoAnne and our Production Coordinator Shannon Reeve talked on an Animated Women UK panel called Keyframes for Success. The purpose of Keyframes for Success is to give advice and tips to students and recent graduates who want to start a career in the animation industry.

In November, our Managing Director Georgina Hurcombe was invited to speak at the ScreenSkills fund panel at Manimation, an industry event in Manchester bringing all areas of the UK animation community together, with the aim of helping each other thrive. At the panel, Georgina spoke about the incredibly beneficial Helen North Achieve programme run by Animated Women UK (which she became a board member of this year) and her experience of managing a regional production company.

Jury Member for BAFTA

Also this year, Georgina Hurcombe was chosen as a jury member for prestigious academy BAFTA’s Children’s Awards. She was a judge for the best director category that included Steve Connelly for Horrible Histories, Mic Graves for The Amazing World of Gumball, Grant Orchard and Sander Jones for Hey Duggee, and the winner Dirk Campbell’s The Worst Witch. Read more about the category that Georgina judged here.

Brand Films

At LoveLove Films, we enjoy working across numerous sectors from brand films to TV adverts, and over the past year we were commissioned to make an array of exciting corporate content. They included masterclasses and brand videos for Unilever’s hair care giant TRESemmé, British mapping agency Ordnance Survey as well as local companies like LiveWell Dorset, along with many, many more exciting projects!

In May, we produced videos for TRESemmé and their The Presence MasterClass™, developed in collaboration with the International Center for Research on Women. The goal of the master class is to help empower women with #PowerYourPresence, and to help women succeed and reach their full potential. We produced nineteen videos in total for their seven-part course.

As well as our incredible project with Unilever’s TRESemmé, our team worked with national mapping agency Ordnance Survey.

We were asked to produce a promotional video for their OS Maps mobile app. Our team developed a clear mixed-media video using our green screen and graphics to explain the perks of the app. Ordnance Survey were delighted with out video and have commissioned several other videos for us to make in the future.

This year, we were also approached by health and wellness service LiveWell Dorset, based in Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset. As a regional studio, we were delighted to be able to help such an important local service for adults who’d like to improve their wellbeing. We created a short 2D animated film, showing the support they offer to people who want to get active, lose weight, stop drinking or quit smoking in a clear, positive animation style.

Our Managing Director was delighted to attend Manimation in November and speak on the Animated Skills Council Panel there.

LoveLove Films’ MD Georgina Hurcombe traveled up to Greater Manchester for the animation industry event Manimation last month. Started by the Children’s Media Conference (CMC) in 2013, Manimation was created as an annual event focused on bringing all areas of the UK animation community together in a friendly setting, designed to help each other flourish.

Seven years on, Manimation continues to be a positive event for networking and knowledge exchanging for animation studios across the country. While there, Georgina spoke at a panel hosted by Tom Box, a chair of the Animation Skills Council, the animation arm of ScreenSkills.

Including Georgina, there were eleven people from the UK animation industry on the panel, representing studios big and small, old and new, and central and regional. The purpose of the panel was to celebrate projects funded by the Animation Skills Fund, and how the application of those funds could be improved.

One of the programmes Georgina spoke about was the Helen North Achieve Programme, run by Animated Women UK (AWUK) and funded by the Animation Skills Fund. The programme was started in response to a survey that found “74% of females over the age of 30 working in animation and VFX in the UK feel that they have or will experience career barriers relating to their gender”.

To try to reduce that percentage, AWUK started a programme in which a group of women at different stages of their careers are selected to come together and discuss all areas of their professional lives, from confidence to public speaking to networking.

Georgina and Fettle animation’s producer, Kath Shackleton, expressed how positive the programme had been for them, highlighting it’s value for confidence building, especially for more regional animation studios who miss out on support and networking events prominent in hubs like London and Bristol.

Speaking about her experience at Manimation this year, Georgina said:

“It’s a real honour to be able to represent regional studios at an event like Manimation and get voices that aren’t always front and centre heard”.

Georgina added:

“It was great to have the platform to encourage women in – and thinking of getting into – the animation industry to apply for the Helen North Achieve Programme. It’s such a great opportunity to meet animators with similar experiences to you from up and down the country and help each other reach your full potential.”

Also speaking at Manimation was the inspirational Peter Lord, one of the founders of Aardman Animations, the studio behind Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and Early Man. He talked about his studio’s inspiring journey from hobbyists to one of the most distinguished studios in the world. Aardman are also the distributors of our animated pre-school IP Pop Paper City.

In this blog, JoAnne Salmon discusses her trip to the 2019 Sharjah International Film Festival (SIFF) for a screening of Chin Up. Chin Up is an animated documentary about hope and self-acceptance. Directed by JoAanne and produced by the LoveLove Films team, Chin Up has enjoyed a hugely successful festival run since its release in August 2018, with its screening in Sharjah being the animated documentary’s latest triumph.

Hear all about JoAnne’s experiences at the festival below:

I am thrilled to be writing this blog from the Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth. Chin Up is being screened here, and I am lucky enough to attend!
2019 is the 7th year of SIFF, a week-long festival running from the 12th to the 18th of October. The festival aims to enhance children’s knowledge of technology and film-making by screening movies from all over the world, and Q and As with the filmmakers after each screening.

Showing the film in Sharjah and flying around the world has been just one of the highlights of the past year, since the LoveLove Films team completed Chin Up. It has been amazing to such a variety of films from all over the world. This shows a great sense of diversity emerging in filmmaking, and it’s great for future generations to see. I am so proud to see Chin Up being part of the voice promoting diversity.

There were a few selected trailers and films shown at the opening ceremony of the festival. Chin up was one the films selected for the opening ceremony and I was even invited to be 1 of the 4 speakers at the event. Chin Up also received an award during the ceremony.

The following day, Chin Up’s screening was attended by a large group of local school children. They all got a chance to ask me and the other filmmakers questions after the screening, which was a lot of fun. They later came up and spoke to us briefly and it was great to hear how a lot of them aspire to be filmmakers themselves when they grow up.

Sharjah isn’t the only amazing location that the film has been screened in; over the last year, the film has been screened at WorldFest Houston, Athens International Documentary Festival, the American Documentary Festival, Annecy International Film Festival and Athens International Film and Video Festival.

Chin Up has also had a phenomenal UK reception. The film went to Edinburgh International Film Festival, Encounters Film Festival in Bristol, and is going to Aesthetica Film Festival just next month. It is also listed here, in the British Directory.

In March 2019, the film received a Royal Television Society award for Best Online Production, which was absolutely incredible. The LoveLove Films team and I put in an incredible amount of work, so to receive such recognition for it is truly wonderful.

I asked Georgina Hurcombe, LoveLove Films’ Managing Director her thoughts on Chin Up’s success:

“It is amazing to see Chin Up continue to have such a big impact on people. It is such a touching and heart-warming story, not just about disability but also about acceptance. As Jo says in the film, we all feel as though we don’t belong sometimes. I hope that the film can keep acting as a source of inspiration and I am so proud to see how far it’s come”.

Whilst I was in Sharjah, I was interviewed by Correio de Povo, a Brazillian newspaper, and it is so wonderful to see the film have an impact so widely.

Watch the interview here.

In the short speech that I gave at the opening ceremony in Sharjah, I said how glad I was that the title ‘Chin Up’ stuck. What I once saw as my biggest weakness and flaw, my small chin, actually turned out to be my biggest strength and I hope that others with Treacher Collins Syndrome like myself, or with other disabilities, can perhaps see this and feel the same about themselves.

Animated Explainer Videos – what are they, and how can they benefit your business?
In recent years, animated explainer videos have surged in popularity, and have been used to improve sales of a diverse range of businesses. So what exactly are these magical, sales-boosting animated videos, and why should you start using them for your business/product as soon as possible?

Explainer videos are a brilliant way of revealing essential information about your product or business in a creative manner. They are most commonly 2/3D short animated videos; animation provides businesses with the creative freedom to highlight their services in ways that other formats can’t.  To get the most out of your explainer video, they are most frequently placed on the front page of a website, or wherever is most prominent for your business. Explainer videos are short in duration; around 15-60 seconds is usually the sweet spot. Explainer videos can be used across all of a business’ social media platforms, and are fantastic for presentations and exhibitions.

Businesses sometimes face difficulties in advertising their brand or a product they may have through simple branded videos. Animated explainer videos are a proven method of achieving this, providing viewers with both an engrossing and informative video experience. Explainer videos increase a viewers’ understanding of your business or the product that you’re advertising.

In Wyzowl’s 2019 video marketing report, research revealed that 87% of businesses now use video as a marketing tool, which is up from 81% in 2018 and 63% in 2017, while 83% of marketers said that video gives them a good return-on-investment (up from 78% in 2018). More specifically, 96% of people said that they watched explainer videos to learn more about a business’s products or services. How else can explainer videos benefit your business or product? As well as being an ultra-effective way of communicating your business’ products and services, there are also numerous other areas in which explainer videos can benefit your business. For instance, explainer videos can help in building powerful branding, increasing conversion rates, ensuring higher share percentage rates, and more. Explainer videos will boost your online presence; they are a hotspot for marketing strategies across a variety of businesses.
