This is a crop from the center of File:Anthony Johnson Clerical Signature with Marke PNG.png. I don't see any reason why we would keep a separate image of the center of this signature mark without its accompanying name. I also note that it has an unexplained watermark, "jhm". .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 10:23, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim. I don't disagree. jHm (monogram for my name - which is needless). (Can I delete the image now or should I wait until more people agree with us?) Just know that File:Anthony Johnson Clerical Signature with Marke PNG.png is not Anthony's signature on either side of his marke. The only signature we have of his is the marke itself, so I should probably delete the full name versions, too. (They just seemed to provide perspective to the marke.)

In other words, only the image posted on the page is in his own handwriting; ergo, applicable.PresidentistVB (talk) 11:35, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I can close this at any time if you agree (it takes an Admin to delete an image). I understand that File:Anthony Johnson Clerical Signature with Marke PNG.png shows a signature along the lines of "X -- John Doe, his mark", where a second party has verified that the mark in the center was made by Anthony Johnson. As I said above, I think that the full image is the file to keep, not simply the center mark.
I'm also going to change the license on the one we keep. It's not clear that there is anything here that ever had a copyright -- signatures in the USA do not, and your copy of it does not have a copyright of its own, so the image is {{PD-text}}. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 12:53, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect. I agree it helps to have the additional information. You may prefer this one, instead. Feel free to link or upload it (however you wish), but I believe you must keep the link somewhere to the Maryland Archives, per the document's web page on the other click of the link. I can upload it if you wish; although something tells me you know how. Nice working with you... Dr. Matt PresidentistVB (talk) 13:12, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Quick question... WP states that if I have created the image from a PD source, the copyright, by definition should belong to the artist. Did I misread? PresidentistVB (talk) 13:14, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If the subject of the image is a 2D work -- a painting, drawing, signature, etc. -- then a person who scans or photographs the work does not get a copyright, as there is no creative input. This follows Bridgeman vs. Corel which WMF has adopted as its policy throughout all projects. Thus your copy of a PD work does not have any copyright even though your copy is recent. If the work is 3D -- sculpture and other 3D pieces including coins and medals -- then the photograph does have a copyright. In either case the photograph is a derivative work of the underlying work of art and requires a license from the artist unless the underlying work is PD by reason of age or otherwise. .     Jim . . . . Sure there is some sculptures in the background, but does that mean that every single image with those sculptures needs to be deleted? NO. Fictitious claim of authority. Denied where attempt made to use image on Wikinews. (See here) -Brian McNeil / talk 04:20, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

RE: (The discussion at Wikinews between McNeil and I) triggered McNeil to request deletion of this image for invalid purposes that appear to be for biased opinions about the creditworthiness of the UN, Mr. Peterson, a delegate at the UN, Yahoo News, and published statements at UN.ORG, which were the reference sources of an article the I had written and submitted to Wikinews for review a few days ago.

Since this incident, I have been informed in an email from Mr. Peterson's administrative office that they have contacted Mr. Suda of Wikimedia Permissions to confirm that I had been previously authorized to use this image for non-commercial purpose in social and digital media publications. -Rvplpr

It is obviously a photograph of a book page; uploader yet claims it was not previously published (copyright of photography of object vs. copyright of photographed object). Please note also the mangled description («Streets Of Dresdner», sic!), and the trollish categorization (Transpolar railroad, srsly?). Note also that this image is in use in Wikibooks. Deleted -- Again, owning a copy of a photograph does not give you the right to license it for general use. I hope you understand that if you own a book, a CD, or a DVD that you cannot make copies because you do not own the copyright. Exactly the same law applies to photographs, drawings, posters, paintings, and all other created works. The fact that this is a family file does not matter -- the only person who can grant a general license for Commons is the actual photographer or his heir. .     Jim . . . . Some of these images are illustrations to articles. Because you want to delete all the images of this object, the Wikipedia remain without illustrations. A part in the WLM will be for you a clue where to look for pictures to be deleted. It turns out that people are trying to send pictures of the object, and you are removing. In this case, please contact the organizers WLM them to clean the object from the list, because you can still remove all. Same goes for these photos. — Star61 12:30, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted: Star61, the test for de minimis is not the size of the object, or how much of the image it occupies, but whether the average reader would notice if it were gone. I've had an old print of this picture, I could not scan it because the print was too big so I took a photo. Therefore the quality of the digital picture is not optimal. In the old print you can clearly see 1903 as date of production, and there is signature, as far as I can read, which is: "A. Castaigne Hoei-Tcheau (Kiaug Man)". Below the Picture there is a German legend "Ein Grillenkampf in China (S. 464)" (old font, Süterlin). So probably it was a illustration for a book. If we suppose that the artist was indeed André Castaigne the picture is clearly free because he died 1929. Also otherwhise the picture seems to be old enough. --Schönitzer (talk) 06:54, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We've compared the signature of the original with the signature of File:King George I of Greece presenting awards at the 1896 Olympics.jpg and they mach – so it is of André Castaigne. -- Michael F. Schönitzer 20:02, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Unclear copyright status and unlikely {{Cc-by-3.0}}. Taken from http://gallery.kewl.lu/misc/unix-pic/ccpenguin (12.2010) which is indeed licensed with {{Cc-by-3.0}} but the file was already circulating before that date = (example) http://www.boiledbeans.net/2009/06/03/waaay-too-simple/ (2009) = http://www.boiledbeans.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/540e42e807c5fbe15f7dcd8af8676c66.jpg, described with: "As admitted by Linus Torvalds himself, this is ccpenguin.jpg, the file that inspired Tux – the Linux mascot." This file was initially tagged by JuTa as no license (No license since)... which is absolutely correct. This image is old enough however to qualify for one of the OLD tags, if there was sufficient information about the work. Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:00, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What information, other than that it was published in 1719, would be required? -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 05:58, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The source of the image would be either (a) it was an old book and I scanned it... or it was scanned and on some webpage, or (b) it is an old book, I own it and I took a photo of it... or (c) wherever the base image came from. Then with the full citation for the book and the date of book publication plus the source, one of the PD-old tags can be applied to it and problem solved! See my user page here on Commons for links the the PD-old tags. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 15:16, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't express myself clearly. My sentence should have continued: What information, other than that it was published in 1719, would be required, without which it cannot be accepted on Wikimedia Commons? And why would Commons require that information? -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 01:16, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. It's clearly a scan of an old book, which makes it public domain. The image page also includes link to the webpage that it came from, which is (a); but it's irrelevant. The book publication information is both on the page linked to and part of the image itself. That's what "de l'imprimerie" means, publication information, it contains both date and publishing house. Feel free to read them from there and write them out, the fact that they are clearly legible but not written out isn't reason to delete. --GRuban (talk) 02:10, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
 Comment
  • @GRuban: Agreed I don't think it's reason to delete, I transferred it over here to get more time to solve the source issue, instead of just deleting it. "That's what "de l'imprimerie" means" - I also agree with you however that information is imbedded in the image, not written out in words on the upload template. Commons requires the source be stated by typing the data in the upload template which auto-translates for users who do not speak the same language as the uploaders. Also the search engines only go by the template information, they are unable (as of yet) to read information embedded in images.
  • @Michael Bednarek: Please see Commons:Source#Source for the full explanation of why sources are needed. This information is provided by link from the upload page for anyone who uploads an image to Commons. All that needs to happen is a a tiny bit of typing on the template of the uploaded file and the problem is solved! No worries, this is not a value-judgement it's only a process, please, if it is fixed, the situation will resolve, the image will be fine. I agree with both of you. I don't think it should be deleted, but the "paperwork" needs to be finished. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 04:02, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • License tags {{PD-old-100}} & {{PD-scan}} now added. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 06:25, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Transcription from the French and into English also added. Though I still don't like the idea of nominating a perfectly fine image for deletion just because a not-strictly-necessary field wasn't filled out. --GRuban (talk) 20:30, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  •  I withdraw my nomination Since the page is now fixed, I withdraw my nomination. @GRuban: The source & license fields are required at upload. To both you & Michael Bednarek, thank you for all your help. The image description, source & license are now where they could have been at upload and are vastly improved from where they were when this was first tagged (by another) for deletion. Cheers!

Thanks for pointing that out, I was not aware. I just found the photo on Flickr and thought it was appropriate because it showed the location of each of the Euronext exchanges. I have tried to search where each of the photos came from to ensure that there was no copyright infringement and it appears that they all come from Wikipedia and the Lisbon one I believe is from Creative Commons. Is there any way to attribute them as such? I think it's important that all 5 locations are shown as opposed to just one which does not accurately represent all Euronext exchanges. -- Wallnut tree (talk) 11:33, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wallnut tree,
if you can properly source all the images, i.e. writing the wiki-links into the source-entry of the collage and doing the same with authors, then we could probably host it.

Hi Gunnex, Thank you for pointing all this out of to me, I was certainly not aware. Would this be a better way to move forward? -- Wallnut tree (talk) 07:42 , 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Feel free to do that but please don't overwrite the above collages (just to avoid that the copyrighted images land in the file history and with this they may be still retrievable). See COM:Collages for details, especially "providing links to the images (...)" as "(...) this is often required for attribution licenses, and is also required in order to verify if the images are freely licensed in compliance with Commons policy.". The sculpture was created in 2001, so it is still subject to copyright restrictions. There is no freedom of panorama exemption in the Ukraine.

Themightyquill (talk) 07:16, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    • My picture File:Euromaidan in Kiev 2014-02-19 12-31.jpg clearly does not violate FOP, since there's is exemption in Ukrainian law:
...it shall be permitted without the consent of the author (or other copyright holder) and with mandatory indication of the author's name and of the source of borrowing: ... to reproduce, in order to highlight current events by means of photography or cinematography, to carry out public notification or other public communication of the works seen or heard in the course of such events to the extent justified by the informational purpose (see Commons:Freedom of panorama#Ukraine)
    • The purpose of this picture is clearly depicting events in Kyiv on 19 February 2014 during the Ukrainian Revolution and not to show the statue itself. This is obvious from the position of the statue on the photo (it's seen only partially and in shade), absence of focus on the statue, and even name and description. --Amakuha (talk) 13:43, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Amakuha: I don't think it qualifies under de minimis, but that exemption is clear enough and this is obiovusly being used to depict current events. So that's great, let's keep it. Can you please add a note explaining this to the image description? - Themightyquill (talk) 15:42, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The interest of the photographer was the monument, given the files' titles and descriptions and the fact that they were uploaded as part of the 'Wiki Loves Monuments' initiative. --Eleassar (t/p) 08:45, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The only reason to tag all these images as images of the statue was participation in WLM: images of monuments were accepted (this statue is a monument), but images of the whole square were not (the ensemble of the square is not protected as a monument). Thus people did tagged these images as those of monuments, although many names (like File:Maidan Nezalezhnosti 001.jpg or File:Вечірній майдан.JPG) indicate these images are views of the whole square, not of that particular monument — NickK (talk) 17:02, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

— Star61 12:02, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Kept three per discussion above, Deleted the rest. The argument that some of the images are of the whole square does not address the fact that the monument is physically at the center of the square and therefore is central to all the images. This probelm is addressed by FOP laws, but there is none in Ukraine. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 11:06, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As with the previous nominations — there's still no FOP in Ukraine.

Per COM:FOP#Ukraine: non-free monument. Eleassar (t/p) 19:14, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Keep, this is a picture of Far Caves buildings of the monastery (Дальні печери Києво-Печерської Лаври), with all three buildings around the statue being notable (architectural monuments), while the statue is not a monument. It is unfortunate that a copyrighted statue is in the middle, but this is a nice broad view of the territory of Far Caves which cannot be taken without this statue — NickK (talk) 22:34, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted: THe fact that it is "nice broad view" does not change the fact that there is a copyrighted work in the middle. That problem is what FOP laws address, but there is none in Ukraine. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 10:57, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can not be identified, may show Byturus ochraeus or Byturus tomentosus. So it's not useful. see also de:Wikipedia:Redaktion Biologie/Bestimmung#Käfer. Biodehio (talk) 06:39, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This file was initially tagged by EugeneZelenko as no source (No source since) which is correct. Subsequently uploader left a note on the image claiming it's his own work and why. Converting to DR for more time to work out this licensing issue. Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:55, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Question Then why is the piece signed "Romero"? Ellin Beltz (talk) 06:35, 12 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Delete Historiador1923, this drawing is apparently by "Romero". He owns the copyright. Owning a copy of a drawing does not make you the owner of any rights to it. A mere scan or photograph of a drawing does not give you any rights. In order to keep this on Commons, we will need a license from Romero using the procedure at Commons:OTRS. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 10:42, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim You are mistaken , Romero does not exist, because , Romero is fictisio name, is not real name.

Romero is my now Please reconsider Thanks --Historiador1923 (talk) 20:26, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Freedom of panorama rules in Germany, Romania, France, Italy do not allow for these pictures.

LGA talkedits 04:21, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted: In most countries, all paintings, sculpture, architecture, text, and other creative works have copyrights which last for 70 years after the death of the creator. An image of a work that is still under copyright is a derivative work, and infringes on the copyright so that we cannot usually keep the image on Commons. In some countries, there is a special exception to the copyright law which allows such images under certain circumstances. We call that exception freedom of panorama (FOP). Unfortunately there is no applicable FOP exception in this case. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 16:45, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Freedom of panorama rules in Spain only allow for works "permanently located in parks or on streets" these are indoors and Poland and England only allow it for "are permanently exhibited" they are not.

DeleteWith regards the photo I took I didn't think of it as sculpture/object d'art when I took it so did not consider the copyright of the trophy when I took it, however there are too few made and impractical to be considered utilitarian, so I guess that it is art however minor, with all that that entails.--KTo288 (talk) 14:14, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
NeutralThat's really poor because football articles in german wikipedia often use the trophies in club articles to illustrate their success... there is already no illustration of the cup winners cup and the uefa cup anymore, which were used in many articles. But what can you do? Seems like nothing. --SamWinchester000 (talk) 18:08, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If we accept that the cups are art, and the precedence of previous deletions is that they are, then they have to go however much we would like to keep them.--KTo288 (talk) 09:13, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Too low resoution. Replaced with File:Fonseca AC.svg. -- ~~ OAlexander (talk) 06:52, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keep See above and please note that while this version has its limits, it is smaller than either of the others. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 13:00, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: This version indeed has limits, such as incorrectly set transparency, which makes it for all practical purposes unusable. Attempts to correct the transparency setting at a file of this physical size will inevitably produce antialiasing issues and any resizing in practical application will aggravate the problem. If anybody has a serious interest in maintaining this file in the notably obsolete GIF format, then it should be recreated from the basis of the SVG version which anyway can be used to display in any size required in actual application. Beyond that, I deem it worth the question how many identical files of logos we should maintain. For all practical intents and purposes this file will never be used and only uses up time when it comes to issues such as categorising, etc. It may have had use when there was no better substitute, which was well in the past. Now it is just surplus to any requirements. Commons should be focused on maintaining quality content and not on retaining what amounts to, crudely spoken, garbage. Cheers, OAlexander (talk) 03:13, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ta add to the finding of a decision: a logo has to be a best possible representation of the original as it otherwise would be a misrepresentation of the trademark owner. This logo has incorrect set transparency and therefore is not suitable for the purpose. The small size is no argument, as an automatically created png logo from the svg file provides and much better an correct outcome, with a resulting file size of only 8k. This logo is a variant that is unsuitable for the project and is not "realistically useful for an educational purpose". To make it fit for any purpose is not worth the effort. I personally use the time rather to effectively organise the collection of Brazilian logos here, add meaningful descriptions, etc., - and add transparency as required to logos where there is no alternative or completely create them anew. Any logo takes at least about three minutes to deal with. And any piece of what effectively amounts to nothing else - permission to speak freely - but garbage is not worth any effort apart from filling out the nomination form. Commons should not be a repository of useless legacy files. Nomination formally on grounds of Commons:Scope and Commons:EDUSE. Cheers, 12:29, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

There doesn't seem to be a good reason to keep two versions of the same file, especially since one is of inferior quality and unused. -FASTILY 10:28, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
